What is Wi-Fi and how Wi-Fi works

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology. It is commonly used to internet access to the device in local area networking to exchange data by radio waves system. It is based on the IEEE 802.11 standards maintain by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This is the most widely used in computer networks in the worldwide. It is link to desktop computer, laptop. CCTv camera, tablet, mobile phone, smart TVs, baby monitor camera, online printers and online smart speakers together in the same time where device support Wi-Fi system.

How Wi-Fi works?

Internet connection comes through wire from internet service provider to a wireless router. Wi-Fi connection comes to compatible devices to interface with the internet through wireless router. Wi-Fi uses multiple parts of the IEEE 802 protocol family with its wired sibling Ethernet. Well – compatible devices can network through wireless access points (WAP) or Access points (AP) to each other as well as to wired devices and the Internet. The different versions of Wi-Fi are uses different radio technologies determining radio bands so that achieved the maximum ranges and speeds. Wi-Fi most commonly uses the 2.4 gigahertz (120 mm) UHF and 5 gigahertz (60 mm) SHF radio bands.

History of Wi-Fi:

The first wi-fi technology invention in 1971 in the Hawaii Islands as a UHF wireless packet network named ALOHAnet. ALOHAnet and the ALOHA protocol were the first precursor to Ethernet and later on IEEE 802.11 protocols respectively.

In 1985 the U.S Federal Communications Commission ruled for unlicensed use.

The Netherlands is called the technical birthplace of Wi-Fi. NCR corporation with AT&T corporation of the Netherlands invented the precursor 802.11. They want use in cashier systems under brand name is WaveLan. Next 10 years(1990 to 2000) wireless network technology sold in name of WaveLan.  The first version  802.11 protocol was released in 1997 and provided link speeds up to 2Mbs. Then 1999 updated version 802.11b to provided link speeds up to 11Mbs.

A trade association named The Wi-Fi Alliance formed in 1999 to hold Wi-Fi trademark and most products are sold under this trademark.

A big breakthrough come when Apple Inc. adopted Wi-Fi connectivity as build in their iBook series of laptops in the year 1999. Apple Inc branded Airport of this wi-fi router.

Different companies uses different patent of Wi-Fi earlier. But now WLAN is only one key patent for Wi-Fi technology. Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation of Australia (CSIRO) deserve for the owner WLAN since 2009 after a controversy.

Version differ for radio wavebands occupy in devices. The full list of versions of Wi-Fi is 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n  for Wi-Fi 4. 802.11h, 802.11i, 802.11-2007, 802.11-2012, 802.11ac for Wi-Fi 5. 802.11ad, 802.11af, 802.11-2016, 802.11ah, 802.11ai, 802.11aj, 802.11aq, 802.11ax for Wi-Fi 6 and 802.11ay for upcoming version.
